Patrick Ryan and Catherine McGrath
Patrick Ryan and Catherine McGrath were born in Ireland, Patrick about 1813[1] and Catherine about 1818[2]. They were married around 1834, possibly in New York where their eldest child, Ellen, was born.[3] About 1840, they moved from New York to Illinois where their third child, Mary Jane, was born in 1841.[4]
Patrick likely died between 1845, when his youngest child, William, was conceived,[5] and 1860, when his wife Catherine is listed as a widow in the City Directory of St. Louis, Missouri.[6] A family story recounts that after Patrick died in Illinois, the family traveled in a wagon to St. Louis. The oldest daughter, Ellen, drove the team and Catherine held the youngest child, William. Supporting the stated timeframe for Patrick’s death and the family story, William H Ryan’s 1909 obituary states that he was two years old (about 1848), when the family moved to St. Louis.[7]
Catherine remained in St. Louis until her death in 1881.[8] She is buried in the Ryan Lot at Calvary Cemetery, as are two sons who pre-deceased her, John in 1862 and James in 1876.[9]
- John Ryan was a Civil War veteran who served from 1861 until his 1862 death. He was a private in the 20th Illinois Infantry Regiment. At age 24, John was mortally wounded at the Battle of Fort Donelson and died shortly afterward on February 27, 1862 at the military hospital in Mound City, Illinois.[10]
- On January 17, 1876, at the age of 28, James Ryan died of tuberculosis in St. Louis at his sister Ellen (Ryan) and brother-in-law Patrick Diamond’s home.[11]

Ellen Ryan and Patrick Diamond
Ellen Ryan was born on December 2, 1835, in New York.[12] She spent her early years in Joliet, Illinois before moving to St. Louis, Missouri with her family.
She married Patrick Diamond, the son of Francis Diamond and Mary Kelly, on September 28, 1856, in St Louis at the Old Cathedral (now the Basilica of St. Louis, King of France).[13] Patrick was born about 1836 in Ireland.[14] He and Ellen had one child, Mary Frances Diamond, born in 1857.[15]
Sadly, both Mary Frances (age 22) and Patrick (age 43) died from tuberculosis in November of 1879 in St Louis.[16] In May 1880, Ellen Diamond purchased Lot 382 in Calvary Cemetery where they are buried.[17]
Ellen Ryan and John Allen
Ellen married William John Allen, on February 1, 1893, in St Louis at St. Thomas of Aquin Catholic Church.[18] John was born in Ireland on June 21, 1822, the son of James Allen and Catherine Kelleher. He died on January 24, 1911, in St Louis.[19]
Ellen (Ryan) (Diamond) Allen died on July 31, 1928, in St Louis.[20] She is buried in Calvary Cemetery in the Diamond Lot along with her first husband and only child.[21]
Mary Jane Ryan and John O’Neil (1), Charles Taylor (2), and Daniel Hardie (3)
Mary Jane Ryan was born on April 8, 1841, in Joliet, Will County, Illinois. She was baptized on June 6, 1841 in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Joliet.[22]
Mary Jane Ryan and John O’Neil
Mary Jane married John O’Neil, son of Eugene O’Neil and Catharine Collins, on Jun 5, 1859, in St. Louis, Missouri at St. John the Apostle and Evangelist Church at Chestnut and 16th streets.[23] He was born about 1834[24], and he died between 1860 and 1866.[25]
Mary Jane and John O’Neil had one child, Eugene John O’Neil, born in March 3,1860.[26] In 1890, at the age of 30, Eugene died of stomach cancer in St. Louis, Missouri.[27] His mother purchased a lot in Calvary Cemetery where Eugene is buried (section one, lot 639).[28]
Mary Jane O’Neil and Charles Taylor
On July 3, 1866, the widow Mary Jane O’Neil married Charles Taylor. They lived together for about three years, until July 3, 1869. Mary Jane sued for divorce on the ground of desertion, which was granted in January 1871.[29]
Mary Jane Taylor and Daniel Hardie
Daniel Hardie, son of Robert Hardie and Janet Buchanan, was born in Borrowstounness (Bo’ness), Linlithgowshire, Scotland on May 12, 1838.[30] He immigrated to the United States about 1870, as did his second wife, a stepdaughter, and two young girls.[31]
By 1877, Daniel was a widower, living with four young daughters, in St. Louis. Mary Jane (Ryan) Taylor and her son were living next door to Daniel.[32]

Mary Jane married Daniel in St. Louis, Missouri on March 6, 1877.[33] The blended family briefly lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, where their first child, Daniel Eugene Hardie, was born in 1878.[34] Their remaining three children were born in St. Louis, Missouri between 1881 and 1886.[35]
About 1897, the family moved to Ohio, first to Ravenna and then to East Liverpool, where Daniel died on February 8, 1916.[36] He is buried in East Liverpool at Riverside Cemetery, in a lot shared with his stepdaughter and daughter from his second marriage: Christina and Janet.[37]
Mary Jane died at the home of her daughter Marie (Hardie) Smeltz in Salem, Ohio on December 10, 1926. Her body was subsequently transported to her daughter Frances (Hardie) Murray’s home in St. Louis, Missouri, and then buried in Calvary Cemetery in the same lot (section one, lot 639) as her son, Eugene O’Neil.[38]
William H Ryan and Maggie Clark (1) and Mary O’Neill (2)
William H Ryan and Maggie Clark
William H Ryan was born in Illinois on May 4, 1846.[39] He married Maggie M Clark about 1876 in St Louis, Missouri.[40] They had five children.
Their three sons died at young ages and are buried in the Ryan Lot in Calvary Cemetery. Maggie died at age 29 in St Louis on August 31, 1886. She is also buried in the Ryan Lot.[41]
William H Ryan and Mary Ellen O’Neill
On November 18, 1891, the widower William Ryan, married Mary Ellen O’Neill at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church at 9th & Barry in St. Louis.[42] Mary Ellen was the daughter of John O’Neill and Margaret Ahern. She was born in Maine on September 1, 1857.[43]
In 1891, William was offered a position as resident manager with the Gallaher Tobacco Company in Henderson, Kentucky.[44] He and Mary moved to Henderson, along with Celeste (age 10) and Irene (age 8), his two daughters from his first marriage. Their only child, William Gallaher Ryan, was born in Henderson on December 16, 1895.[45]
William H Ryan died at age 62 in Henderson, Kentucky on February 12, 1909.[46] He was buried in St. Louis in the Ryan Lot at Calvary Cemetery. Mary remained in Henderson for a few years before returning with her son to St. Louis. She died there on November 10, 1937, and was buried in the Ryan Lot at Calvary Cemetery.[47]
Closing
When Ellen Ryan died in 1928, she had outlived her parents, Patrick Ryan and Catherine McGrath, and her four siblings. Future generations of this family include the descendants of Mary Jane Ryan’s eleven grandchildren and William H Ryan’s five grandchildren.
Afterword
During my childhood, my father often took his kids to Calvary Cemetery. The names of my Dad’s maternal ancestors were chiseled into the gravestones on the Ryan and Hardie Lots. Some visits, new details and family stories were related. It was a great way to learn family history.
He never tired of telling the story of how his mother (Frances Hardie Murray) would pack a picnic lunch and take her children to Calvary Cemetery on the streetcar from their home in the south St. Louis neighborhood of “Dutch Town”, to the cemetery on the north side of the city.
After my Mom died, Dad and I went to Calvary often. I would drive and upon arrival Dad would inevitably recount the directions to the Hardie Lot from the main entrance: take the first right, stay to the right, after the monument with the four columns comes into view, look left for the McNair grave and park. McNair was the first governor of Missouri, and his gravestone could be readily seen from the street: it had an engraved bronze plate on the front.
Just beyond the McNair Lot, was the Hardie Lot, where my Dad’s parents and his maternal grandmother, Mary Jane Ryan Hardie, were buried. In later years, other family members would be buried in this lot, including my parents.
Sometimes after visiting the Hardie lot, Dad would walk us down a hill and across a street to the Ryan Lot, where his great uncle William H Ryan and his maternal great-grandmother, Catherine (McGrath) Ryan, were buried.
One of Dad’s personal keepsakes was the deed to the Diamond Lot. If he knew that lot was located adjacent to the Ryan Lot, I don’t remember him pointing it out. Neither did he point out the gravestone for Patric Diamond and Mary Frances Diamond, the first husband and only child of his great aunt, Ellen (Ryan) (Diamond) Allen, whom he called “Auntie”. I discovered these graves after Dad died.
On the way out of the cemetery, he would sometimes drive by the “Italian” section, where to my endless fascination pictures of the people were mounted on their gravestones. Often, he would drive by the standout Sherman monuments, marking the graves of General Tecumseh Sherman, his wife and children.
Those are happy memories of my Dad and likely influenced my family history explorations after he died. I think he would have enjoyed hearing the many stories I’ve discovered and I’ve enjoyed wandering around cemeteries ever since.
