Autosomal (atDNA, AncestryDNA, Family Finder)
If you match me on this test, our common ancestor is probably within six (6) generations. If you know the names of your ancestors, or where they came from, see my Autosomal page.
Y Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA)
If you match me on this test our common ancestor is a male on our paternal (father’s) line. I have tested 67 markers. The closeness of our relationship depends on how many markers you had tested and the genetic distance between our matches.
- If you tested 12 markers we are related, but our common ancestor may be quite distant. Upgrading your test to include more markers would help determine how closely we are (or are not) related – see below.
- If you tested 25 markers and:
- We only match on the 12 marker test our common ancestor may be quite distant.
- We match at the 12 and 25 marker test our common ancestor is a bit closer. Upgrading your test to include more markers would give you more insight into the closeness of our relationship.
- If you tested 37 markers and:
- We only match on the 12 marker test our common ancestor may be quite distant.
- We match at the 12 and 25 marker test our common ancestor is a bit closer.
- We match at 12, 25 and 37 markers and our genetic distance is 3 or lower our common ancestor is relatively close. If you know the names of your ancestors, or where they came from, we may be able to determine the relationship. See my Y-DNA page for more information.
- If you tested 67 markers and:
- We only match on the 12 marker test our common ancestor may be quite distant.
- We match at the 12 and 25 marker test our common ancestor is a bit closer.
- We match at 12, 25 and 37 markers and our genetic distance is 3 or lower our common ancestor is relatively close. If you know the names of your ancestors, or where they came from, we may be able to determine the relationship. See my Y-DNA page for more information
- We match at 67 makers and our genetic distance is 3 or lower – we need to talk!
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)
If you match me on this test our common ancestor is a female in my maternal (mother’s) line. I had the Full Mitochondrial DNA Sequence (FMS) testing performed on my sample.
Common ancestors in mtDNA testing can occur very many generations (and hundreds of years) in the past. For this reason, you should only be looking for possible relationships of we have an exact match: If this is the case, see my Mitochondrial page.
