My interest in this area is focused on Georg Adam Kümpel (b. 5 Nov 1796 in Wernshausen, Germany, d. 29 November 1863 in Bellevue, Jackson, Iowa) and his wife Anna (b. 1802 in Germany, d. 1866 in Bellevue, Jackson, Iowa).

I am trying to verify that he is one of a group of families that emigrated from Wernshausen, Germany in 1847 and to determine if he is related to my great grandfather Justis David Kümpel. Not much is known about Georg Adam Kümpel (See ‘View The List of Emigrants on Kümpel (Kimbal) ).
- There is a tombstone in the Bellevue City Cemetery that started my research into his branch of the family
- ‘Church records, 1861-1988 – United States, Iowa, Jackson, Bellevue‘ (available on Family Search) has burial records as well:
- With the exception of burial records I have been unable to locate any United States records pertaining to Georg Adam Kümpel or his wife Anna. They may have moved frequently in the first few years: In ‘The History of Jackson County, Iowa‘ (published by the Western Historical Company in Chicago, Ill in 1879) says this about their youngest son:
“RICHARD [Adam] KIMBEL, livery and feed stable, and also proprietor of river ferry, and dealer in fine stock, Bellevue; born in Saxony, Germany, in 1840; came to this country at the age of 7 years, going to Galena, Ill. from there to Rush Creek and engaged in farming ; returned to Galena, thence to Bellevue, and ran the only dray in town” (page 667).
They had the following children who appear to have emigrated with them in 1847 and used the surname ‘Kimbel’ in the United States.
